Technology for Younger Workers
One major trend taking place in corporate America is that more members of the millennial generation are entering the workplace. The millennial generation is also sometimes referred to as Generation Y, and is the most recent group to join the workforce. One of the interesting characteristics about this group is that these people have never known life before the internet, and growing up in the digital age can significantly impact the way a person works and interacts with technology. In order to make the most of this next generation of employees, strategically implementing technology such as a virtual PBX system from AccessDirect in order to enable tech-savvy employees to be the most efficient and productive.
In a recent TODAY article, contributor Amy Langfield shared the results of a new study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the University of Southern California and the London Business School, which found that the top concern among millennials is achieving a better work-life balance. More than 70 percent of Millennial respondents indicated that work demands often interfere with their personal lives, while only 63 percent of older generation co-workers complained about the same issue. Since the portion of older generation colleagues concerned about achieving a better work-life balance is still substantial, many have noted that the millennials are merely helping other generations realize how important this is when picking a job.
“That does not mean they are a new slacker generation,” Langfield wrote. “What the millennials want at work is to be judged on their impact, have fun, have a flexible schedule and get rewards for a job well done. They want an emotional connection to their work and to be part of a team focused on a goal. And while they are a wired generation, they want face-to-face contact when it comes to personal topics.”
Implementing Technology in the Workplace
A virtual phone is one cost-effective solution that can be particularly valuable for enabling employees to work remotely in the way that allows them to be the most productive and efficient. AccessDirect’s hosted PBX systems allow organizations to establish business lines on already existing mobile devices. This means employees can use a mobile device as their primary communications. While they can still easily work in an office setting, being mobile allows them to easily take their technology with them anywhere.
In a recent Forbes article, contributor Alex Kantrowitz further detailed how millennials are different than other generations, highlighting what it is that gives them a competitive edge.
“As the first generation brought up on the internet, smartphones and computer games, millennials have an advantage in an increasingly tech reliant workplace,” Kantrowitz wrote. “Digital natives, a label most millennials would gladly own up to, will lead in the modern workplace. The applications are ubiquitous, from the medical field which is transitioning to electronic medical records (along with gamified health and connected medical devices), to politics which now relies on sophisticated data and new media skills, to manufacturing where machines now talk to each other. The modern workplace is becoming one which rewards tech savvy employees. This opens the door for millennials to not just participate but lead.”
